Pastish

In Praise of Musical Creation

Synopsis

What if originality only were an illusion? What if the idea of the solitary genius were a myth to be deconstructed? And what if the greatest composers have always built their work by combining the ideas of others?

Pastish is an animated series project of 40 x 3-minute episodes exploring music history through the lens of borrowing and creative recycling.

From Mozart, who unapologetically drew on the melodies of his contemporaries, to Gainsbourg, weaving themes from the classic repertoire into his own songs. From Chuck Berry, shaping his legendary riffs from early blues records, to today’s beatmakers digging through sound archives in search of fragments that resonate with our collective memory. Each episode reveals the creative processes behind some of the greatest hits, showing how artists reappopriate, transform and recombine musical motifs, melodies, and rythms from the past to shape the sound of tomorrow.

Conceived as a celebration of musical creation, the series journeys through a vast global soundscape, uncovering connections between tracks, and building bridges accross genres and eras. Where music is endlessly recycled, transformed, and reinvented.
